Kaudulla National Park

Kaudulla National Park

Sri Lanka

An essential part of the elephant corridor, offering excellent sightings of large herds in a serene, water-rich environment.

Kaudulla National Park, situated in the Polonnaruwa District, is a critical biodiversity hotspot and a key part of the elephant corridor linking Minneriya and Wasgamuwa parks. Centered around the historic Kaudulla Tank, the park becomes a haven for wildlife, particularly elephants, during the dry months when water sources adhere elsewhere dry up. Visitors can expect to see large herds of elephants grazing on the lush grasslands that emerge from the receding tank waters. The sight of these gentle giants interacting, playing, and nurturing their young is truly heartwarming. Apart from elephants, Kaudulla supports populations of sambar deer, axis deer, monkeys, and occasional leopards and sloth bears. The park is also an Important Bird Area, hosting a variety of water birds such as cormorants, herons, and storks. A jeep safari here offers a quieter, more intimate alternative to the busier parks, allowing for undisturbed observation of nature. The tranquil atmosphere and scenic landscapes make Kaudulla a must-visit for those seeking a genuine connection with Sri Lanka's wildlife.
