Kandy

Sri Lanka

The cultural capital in the hills, housing the Temple of the Tooth Relic and a scenic lake.

Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, is a city surrounded by misty hills and centered around a scenic lake. It is the cultural heart of the island and home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the holiest shrines in the Buddhist world. The temple houses a tooth of the Buddha and attracts pilgrims and tourists alike. Every year in July or August, the city hosts the Esala Perahera, a spectacular procession of dancers, drummers, and caparisoned elephants. Beyond religion, Kandy offers the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, renowned for its orchid house and massive trees. The city's architecture is a mix of Kandyan, colonial, and modern styles. Visitors can enjoy traditional Kandyan dance performances, walk around Kandy Lake, or explore the bustling market. Kandy's cooler climate and rich history make it a pivotal stop on any Sri Lankan tour, serving as the gateway to the central highlands.
