Kandy

Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, is a city surrounded by misty hills and centered around a scenic lake. It is the cultural heart of the island and home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the holiest shrines in the Buddhist world. The temple houses a tooth of the Buddha and attracts pilgrims and tourists alike. Every year in July or August, the city hosts the Esala Perahera, a spectacular procession of dancers, drummers, and caparisoned elephants.
